Streamlining Invasive Species Management in the Pacific Islands
Updating regional invasive-species management guidelines for practitioners, partners and funders across the Pacific.
The challenge
Invasive species pose a significant challenge to the Pacific Islands, where effective biosecurity and control measures are crucial. The region's Guidelines for Invasive Species Management needed updating into a comprehensive resource, aimed primarily at practitioners, that leverages resources within the Pacific and beyond, prevents duplication of effort, optimises cost-effectiveness, and remains relevant for at least a decade.
How we worked
How We Developed the Guidelines: A team of experts from the Pacific Regional Invasive Species Management Support Service (PRISMSS) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) collaborated extensively to modernise the existing guidelines. Under the leadership of Dr Greg Sherley, the team engaged in both face-to-face and virtual discussions to refine the document. The finalised guidelines are now set to be formally endorsed by the inter-governmental meetings of SPREP and the Pacific Community (SPC), establishing them as the standard protocol for invasive species management and biosecurity in the region.
