Creating a 2024–2030 sustainability and resource-mobilisation plan for Pacific invasive-species management.

The challenge

The Pacific Regional Invasive Species Management Support Service (PRISMSS) set out to strengthen its sustainability and resource mobilisation from 2024 to 2030, aiming to bolster the resilience of Pacific Islands against invasive species and climate change impacts. Working with six key governmental and non-governmental partners, and guided by the PRISMSS Declaration of Intent that binds partners to shared goals and a unified operational code, it needed a comprehensive plan to secure the funding, resources and in-kind support required for medium to long-term projects.

What we did

  • Under the guidance of Dr. Greg Sherley, ten innovative concepts for resource mobilisation were developed, including the creation of an Endowment Trust Fund. These concepts were discussed extensively and received endorsements from PRISMSS partners and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) clients.
  • The plan's credibility was further solidified when it gained the endorsement of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) after a detailed presentation and consultation process. This endorsement underscores the strategic alignment of the plan with the expectations of key international development funders.

Outcomes

Benefits for Pacific Islands For PRISMSS partners, the plan offers clear, prioritised options for engaging potential funders, enhancing their ability to secure support for vital projects. It also establishes a best practice business model, reflecting the collective insights and aspirations of all partners involved.
Positive client feedback The process and outcomes of this initiative have been met with a high level of satisfaction from the client, highlighting the efficiency and effectiveness of the collaborative effort. This project not only strengthens the financial foundation for managing invasive species but also promotes robust international cooperation in addressing climate change challenges across the Pacific Islands. Through such strategic initiatives, PRISMSS continues to empower the Pacific Islands, ensuring they are well-equipped to tackle the pressing challenges of biodiversity protection and climate resilience.
