The children's home we help support in Tamil Nadu celebrated a 100% pass rate in this year's public examinations — and Future Partners' twice-yearly giving continues.
This year brought a remarkable result for the children of Karunai Illam: a 100% pass rate in the Class X and Class XII public examinations. The Trust has also continued to support its alumni through higher education and to strengthen its academic mentoring and career guidance — with equal weight given to the children's physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
The Karunai Illam Trust is a New Zealand charitable trust and a member of the Council for International Development. It supports a children's home — the "Illam" — in the rural town of Nilakottai, in Tamil Nadu, India, giving a home and full schooling to around 50 young girls and boys, many from families who cannot meet those costs alone. The Trust grew from the legacy of the Wellington writer Jean Watson, and one of our Associates, Meenakshi Sankar, has long been part of its fundraising team.
Future Partners has been a regular donor to Karunai Illam Trust since 2022, giving twice a year. As Sankar Ramasamy of the Trust explains:
"The payments from Future Partners in June and December are particularly useful for meeting milestone payments to our implementing partner in India. The donations go towards meeting the educational and care needs of the Illam children. To have the support of Future Partners — a professional services firm that works in the area of development — also overlaps with KIT's own aim of enabling the SDGs."
