Paul has a MBA, BE (Civil), MInstD, and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has combined these with a blend of both commercial and for-purpose experience, working in the automotive, financial services and international development sectors. Paul has held key leadership positions, including being CEO for 16+ years of an international development agency, along with senior roles within multinationals, and governance positions including chairing a peak body. Today, Paul’s focus is with BoardWorks, evaluating boards for Crown entities, iwi, private corporations and leading purpose-driven organisations.
Paul has a passion for lifelong learning and has participated in programmes at IMD Business School, the John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; and through Duke University.
During late 2022, Paul led the build of Emergency Alliance, a collaboration of New Zealand’s leading humanitarian organisations that working together, using one voice, will jointly fundraise for significant global emergencies. Paul is a champion for driving collaboration across the for-purpose sector and is Emergency Alliance’s inaugural Executive Director.
Paul is chair for Independent Living, an Auckland-based for purpose organisation focused on making daily life easier for people living with disabilities and for aged people, and Executive Director for Stephenson & Turner, a nationwide cluster of architects and engineers. Paul also serves on several advisory boards.
Paul is married to Angela, father to William and Michael. Paul is working through his bucket list, aiming to run all of Aotearoa’s New Zealand’s beautiful Great Walks - 8 down 3 to go!
