Pacific Islands Media Freedom Index 2023

The "Pacific Islands Media Freedom Index 2023" report provides an overview of the first-ever Pacific Media Freedom Index Report, launched in September 2024 at the 7th Pacific Media Summit in Niue. This report is significant as it covers 14 countries in the Pacific region and is created by Pacific Islanders for Pacific Islanders, establishing an important baseline for media freedom in the area.

Key points from the report include:

  1. Survey Participants: The report is based on a survey of 73 journalists, media executives, and owners from across the region.

  2. Main Threats to Media Freedom

  3. Financial Constraints: Identified as the biggest threat to media freedom in the Pacific.

  4. Social and Cultural Pressures: Ranked as the second major threat.

  5. Political and Legal Pressures: Also significant, ranking third and fourth respectively.

  6. Positive Aspects: Despite the challenges, the report highlights that half of the respondents believe media workers and news platforms enjoy a high level of trust and credibility among the public.
